It's Always Sunny in Sanford

Sanford Housing Cooperative was set up in the 1970s (there's a retro BBC special about it) as a purpose built co-op providing affordable housing where people can interact with the city as a community. It is an oasis in Deptford where 120 residents tend to magnificent gardens, small ponds and look after their well-being as well as their neighbours'.

How does a co-op work? Our traditional housing market runs on profit, but coops are an alternative where everyone is an owner and everyone is a landlord. This results in dramatically affordable rent and a space where anyone can bring an idea or propose a suggestion. It truly is run by the people who are living there. Like any group of people trying to live together it's not always roses, but members have a common intention and believe there is a huge need for more housing like this.
Sanford member, Georgia, shared that she is excited to have Local Greens on her doorstep because it helps connect urban dwellers to the food they eat. She looks forward to how veg bags will encourage more connectivity between houses, more cooking, eating and engaging together. The co-op has a special energy for her, with many international residents and new people always moving in.
In the autumn, Sanford hosts a street party with live-music stages, workshops, food and drinks. It's open to the local community, but you don't have to wait that long to discover this wonderful place.  Everyone is very welcome to collect their veg from this shed, wander down to the pond and gardens, and say hello. Residents are happy to share about their homes. You can also organise a tour by contacting [email protected]
